Well, germany handles things the same way as the usa does concerning special forces: each agency which needs such a special group (or which thinks it could need...) creates his own. Nevertheless I'll try to introduce the most important ones briefly:

KSK
"Kommando Spezialkräfte" (kinda "Command of Special Forces") is a military special force similar to the britsh SAS or US Navy SEALs. Their main tasks are military commando operation like scouting, hostage rescue, counter terror operations, search and destroy. Since they are part of the military, their deployment within german borders is prohibited by the german constitution as long as we do not face war or a serious crisis.
Like similar forces in other countries their operations are mostly secret. They shall give germany the ability to protect, rescue and evacuate our citizens all over the world if necessary.
The unit faces some problems: german military can only act when our parlament agrees first (except immediate danger). This contradicts both secrect and fast deployment.
Btw another fact about german military: highest commander of our armed forces is the "secretary of defense", until the parlament declares war or a serious crisis. In this case the chancellor takes the command of armed forces.

GSG 9
"GrenzSchutzGruppe 9" (kinda "Border Protection Group 9") is a unit of the german federal police, and therefore kind of counterpart to the HRT of the FBI. They are focused on counter terror, hostage rescue and EOD.
As police unit they act mostly inside of germany, but with agreement of another country they can also operate there.

SEK
"Sondereinsatzkommand" (kinda "Special Operation Forces") are german police units similar to american police SWAT. Each federal state (we got 16) has at least one such team.
They are focused on counter terrorism, hostage rescue and high risk warrants.

We got some other special groups like:
- Zentrale Unterstützungsgruppe Zoll ZUZ (Central Custom Support Group)
- Kampfmittelräumdienst KRD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal)
- Mobiles Einsazt Kommando MEK (Mobile Operation Forces)
- Verhandlungsgruppe VG (Negotiator Group)

Btw I'm curious why most people abroad know the GSG9 as german special force. Afaik in germany the majority knows KSK as military and SEK as police, but not really the GSG9. They do not operate really often inside germany, mostly SEK handles things. And in other countries mostly KSK takes the job.

@ Raptor Yeah i know , ask on you tube what is the best French Special Force unit most of foreign people will say GIGN. Sure they are good, they have military statut, but they are not really the French Army special forces. They are specialized on hostage situation (like Marignane), they can arrest criminal war (like in KOSOVO), they can use explosive and work with other French special forces, (like they did in the "Ponnant" case). But in a real war, GIGN will be using less than other special units except for mission described above.

But most of the people never hear (mb it's a good thing) about 1 er RPIMa( wich has the same motto as british SAS but translated in French. Who dares win. Qui ose gagne) 13 RDP French navy commando "Les commando marines" (equivalent of Navy seals or SAS. They were formed by SAS during WW2) or CPA 10. Those units are the real special forces of France. And i don't speak about those one which are "tier 2" as american said (second cercle)

Btw i could add those units in this topic because some of them (1 RPIMa/ commando marines) have anti- terrorist unit. They have been used in 2008 with GIGN fot the case "Le ponnant".

And thanks to Arma 2 (OA), i knew the KSK. If you buy it Raptor, you could play with them.

time to do some advertising for my channel: biggrin

'cпецназ' (specnaz) its just abbreviation of the words 'подразделения специального назначения' (special purpose units) so its not a squad name.

here is documentary about GIGN difused last week on French TV. It is nothing spectacular, you can see lot of operation against drug dealer, some part about the selection to join GIGN and foreign operations in Ivory Coast where they were tasked to protect french ambassy during the crisis. At the end you can see "le tir de confiance" (trust fire) where every new GIGN members shot his comrades after being shot by them in the chest wearing a bulletproof jacket.

It's all in French but some scene don't need translation biggrin
