To avoid that rumors spread to far:

What we know so far for sure:
- the swat 4 master server is down for more than 24 hours right now
- immediate consequence is that the ingame server browser is not working atm, but most servers are still reachable via direct IP or tools like xfire or gametracker
- furthermore it seems like online server are not reachable via direct IP or xfire or gametracker after a restart of the server, MarkMods is working on a solution of this issue

We suspect that the master server is/was hosted by gamespy tech
http://www.poweredbygamespy.com/about/
(based on a reply ETS captain got from IGN support)
On their site and forum is no notification about any shutdown or technical problem so far. I didn't found an option to register at their forum to start a discussion. But ETS Captain has written to the support and is waiting for a response.

It's still possible that gamespy just encountered a major technical problem. In this case they are for sure working on it and the master server will go online again in the next few days.
But more likely gamespy has stopped the support for swat4 because they didn't received (enough) payment from the original developer/publisher. In this case we could try to collect money in the swat community and try to pay gamespy for keeping the master server online. I'm really not sure about the costs, I guess 200$/month. But it could also be just 20 or mb even 2000. And I'm not sure if gamespy accepts such a solution.

The option to run our own master server is extremely difficult (in opposite to what I have thought in the first place). We would need an approriate software. Probably gamespy won't give us their. And developing our own is complicated, mb illegal. We also need a good server to run the software. Last but not least is the master server either hard coded into swat or given via a configuration parameter (ini file or registry entry or something like that), either as fixed IP or domain name. So we would need a way to modify this.

MarkMods are also discussing the problem + trying to find a solution to get server after a restart online again:

2 posts at the IGN forum so far without a good reply (but according to ETS Captain it's anyway the wrong forum):

There is a rumor that Gamespy Arcade is down and that's the reason of the trouble ( http://www.gamespyarcade.com/support/ ). But gamespy arcade is just an additional tool and it's still under control of IGN. As ETS Captain already pointed out IGN is not longer responsible for master server, a company called GLU took it over. So forget about this gamespy arcade crap.

There are some other games affected (e.g. http://forum.team17.com/showthread.php?t=58705 ).

And I found an article stating that GLU will shutdown their free option in the nearby future: http://www.examiner.com/article....e-table
Anyway imo swat is to big for the free option at all. And the shutdown should be in december.

Pls post everything related to this topic in this thread and not to the shoutbox, otherwise the discussion would split up and become really confusing. Thx.

Hello guys.I have a bad news.http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20120802006354/en/Glu-Acquires-GameSpy-Technology-Expand-C onnected-Cross-Platform

Now we cant be able to see server lists. :(

@Mohit: have you read the article? "There will be no disruption in service to GameSpy’s current customers and contracts as a result of this acquisition by Glu."
The pure fact that GameSpy Tech was sold doesn't explain why the swat 4 master server is down. Other master servers (e.g. for Arma2) are still online afaik. And GameSpy Tech was sold to GLU already 2 months ago.

I read that GameSpy sold that master server 2 months ago and it worked until now. So new owner kept it online and running for 2 months after the sale. Maybe a temporary blackout? Maybe stopping the server for another reasons? New company is concentrated on mobile phones. Maybe they want the server for their different purposes.

Gameranger, will still work, one of their reps sent us this.................

Hi guys, I've already sent an email to Hunter (mainly because his email address was in his sig), but I'm posting here as well.

I'm the developer of GameRanger.

SWAT 4 / TSS does not have to die. People are still playing it online via GameRanger.

This situation has happened with a lot of other games where GameSpy or EA have killed off the servers without warning (EA usually gives some advance notice at least). Some other major examples recently were GRID, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, and the Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth series. Those games are thriving now.

It is not certain that the official servers are permanently gone, but being down for several days is not a good sign, and based on history it should probably be treated as such.

Scott.

Besides the GameRanger solution there are currently 2 tools available to solve the problem. Both act like the original server browser for the client. But they are slower and the server has to be added once manually (preferably by the server hoster; once the server is registered, it's visible for all clients using this corresponding tool).

tool made by {USSP} DExUS: http://uac.ac/#news
(this one works a little bit better in my eyes)

plugin for swat-downloader made by |VOWS|Desrat: http://desrat.lightning-bolt.net/update.html

Also MarkieBoy is working at a mod with a new ingame server browser, this could be a nice solution in the long-run but will require some time to get finished: http://forum.markmods.com/index.php?topic=2860.150

*update*
MarkMods has released an update for GEZ and Mark Mod to fix the query problem: http://forum.markmods.com/index.php?topic=2889.0

(I didn't tested it yet, will have a deeper look at it later.)

The new MarkMods Master is working, but all clients need to install a patch to make the in game server browser working: http://forum.markmods.com/index.php?topic=2898.0
(is still a beta version though)

Seems like we have to use xfire and the MarkMod-Serverlist-Patch for the future. The GameSpy Masterserver won't come back, and gametracker isn't working again yet.
Btw found a nice article in the SAS forums: http://www.sasclan.org/modules....hlight=
(although I'm not sure how reliable the author of the article is; direct link: http://games.slashdot.org/story....warning )
