Hello everyone.
I suggest here to share and discuss examples of military and SWAT operations in world - hostage rescues, for example. Not only it is interesting to read, but it also can be useful for us sometimes, studying fails and successes in such operations can give us some thoughts.

I'll start with Beslan school hostage crisis (a really tough one, there wasn't any time for planning when shooting started)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beslan_school_hostage_crisis
and Waco Siege (an example why FBI "cannot into" sieges)

The Battle of Ganjgal Valley. The video below is especially interesting. While not that relevant for our everyday gaming it shows how wrong an operation can go due to foiled intel, bad coordination and misjudgment.

Moscow theatre hostage crisis or "Nord-Ost" (killing all terrorists doesn't mean you have saved all civilians)

1997 North Hollywood Shootout

That incident shows very well why one needs Swat teams. It demonstrated how only 2 bad guys with superior equipment can dominate a whole bunch of patrol officers who simply don't have the right weapons at hand. The bad guys only get caught after a bunch of mistakes: splitting up, abandoning a functional rifle and switching to a pistol, and hijacking a car without keys.
Moreover it's interesting to see that even solid objects like a car do not provide 100% cover against a high caliber rifle with the right ammunition. I also like how the police improvised, getting rifles from a gunstore and using a bypassing armored vehicle.
Last but not least the final takedown of the second suspect by a swat team. One of the rare occasions where you can see a swat team applying lethal force from a really good perspective.
Oh and my favorite aspect of this one: no one, except the bad guys, was killed

PS @Luis: wouldn't the videos in this thread make a nice YT playlist for our channel?

I've added "Battleground brothers" also known as "Battleground Afghanistan" Season 1 on the playlist.

No, it's not. The Link in your post works, just the quoted one is broken (gj ucoz).
