Background
Preceding Events
Following Operation Enduring Freedom [Kunar Province Campaign] in Afghanistan that ended in 2015 and Operation Imposing Justice [JgBtl 292 Campaign] in Pakistan until the end of 2017, the insurgency on the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan still continued. Following NATO's withdrawal from Afghanistan the insurgent groups began rebuilding their ranks and engaging with forces of Operation Imposing Justice. This caused the progress made so far to drastically reverse, several villages have been fully taken over by insurgents; what used to be a mixture of ambushes and harassment attacks started turning into a territorial war. Operation Mutual Aid
In response to this, facing the planned end of Operation Imposing Justice, Operation Mutual Aid was launched with the objective of ending the insurgencies in Afghanistan and Pakistan once and for all. Five regional commands have been assigned to Afghan provinces Kunar, Nagarhar, Logar, Paktiya, Khost and Pakistani provinces Qabailistan (previously the semi- autonomous Federally Administered Tribal Areas) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Almost all NATO member states, five non-NATO states (namely Pakistan, Afghanistan, Switzlerland, Australia, Finland and Sweden) have committed troops for the operation. Russian and Chinese military observers have been deployed as well.
Location and Areas of Responsibility of the Regional Commands
